ISPs Dishnet to foray into Internet telephony Raja Simhan T.E.
CHENNAI, March 22 THE city-based Internet Service Providers (ISP),DishnetDSL Ltd, plans to launch Internet telephony services in April. This follows the Internet telephony guidelines issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Thursday allowing ISPs to process and carry voice signals from April 1. The company's Executive Vice-President, Mr K. Srinivasan, told Business Line that Dishnet would apply for a licence with the Government in a day or two. ``The guidelines are good for the ISPs, who have been providing so far only pure vanilla Internet service. The ISPs were finding it difficult to survive with this. However, Net telephony would give an opportunity for the ISPs to provide value-added services for the customers. The potential is huge for carrying voice signals,'' he added. The scope of the service includes PC (personal computer)-to-PC, PC to telephone and IP (Internet protocol)-based H.323/SIP (Session Initiated Protocol responsible for call set-up and call signalling) terminals both in India and abroad. According to Mr Srinivasan, Dishnet has a mix of services including narrowband, broadband, dial-up and DSL. The company has the advantage of having broadband, and can provide `good, quality and faster' voice services. The company would offer a composite package to DSL customers including a Net phone. Dishnet currently has around 20,000 DSL customers. ``With the Net telephony, we expect a exponential growth in the customer base,'' he said, without revealing the numbers, including the investment going into the new venture. ``We are working the cost for the new venture,'' he added.
