TN gender equity efforts hailed

CHENNAI: A high-level team, led by eminent agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, on Friday called on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, and commended the steps being taken by her Government to foster gender equity and women's development in the State.
The delegation comprised 26 women scientists from the Asia-Pacific region and seven Unesco officials.
The scientists were here to attend a conference on Gender Equity, organised by the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, an official release said.
The delegation was explained about the various steps being taken by the State Government to raise the standard of living of women, especially those living in rural areas, and prevent female infanticide.
Functioning of the cradle baby scheme, the Mother Teresa Women University and the all women police stations were also explained to them, the release said.
Ms Jayalalithaa briefed the scientists on the incentives for couples opting for family planning after two female children and reservation for women in statutory and non-statutory committees. Agencies
