NIIT to broadbase computer education

HYDERABAD, Dec. 2

THE IT training major NIIT Ltd, which has launched a programme to reach out computer training across the country, has offered to train all members of State Legislature as a first step to spark the campaign of computer literacy.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N.Chandrababu Naidu, and the Governor, Dr C. Rangarajan, have pledged support to the world computer literacy mission and work towards developing a computer literate country. The Governor released the Indian language software Windik and NIIT Swift Jyothi courseware here on Monday .

The World Computer Literacy Day is being celebrated today, when about two lakh people will begin their first interaction with computers at over 2,500 NIIT education centres across the country. Airtel, Cybermedia and WebDunia have been roped in by NIIT to support this initiative, according to an NIIT communiqué.

The Head of NIIT, computer education in schools, Mr L. Balasubramanium, in a statement said today computer skills have become a necessity in almost every sphere of life. Andhra Pradesh has led in the deployment of IT for e-governance applications. Initiation of citizen into literacy will help reap the benefits of e-governance quickly. IT empowerment will help build a better future.

NIIT, which has recently been mandated the task of providing computer training in about 663 Government schools, has just started the project. Under this initiative, about two-lakh students will be introduced to computers as a part of the State initiative to introduce computers in schools.

Dr Sugata Mitra, Head, NIIT's Centre for Research and Cognitive Systems, said that the programme has been designed in such a way that even 60-year old person, who is hesitant to learn computers, will be emboldened to take the plunge. At the same time, the course, with several fun elements to it, holds appeal for youngsters as well.
