HYDERABAD, Dec. 2

THE Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad and the Cardiff School of Biosciences, Cardiff University, based in Cardiff, Wales, have entered into a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation in the biosciences area covering cellular and molecular biology.

Following the understanding, the two will focus on cooperation in the areas of mammalian genetics, mammalian development, embryonic stem biology, mouse transgenic and gene knockout technologies.

Prof Martin Evans, Director of Cardiff School of Biosciences, and Dr Lalji Singh, Director, CCMB, Hyderabad signed the MoU recently.

Commenting on the MoU, Prof Evans said, "We are extremely excited to be working with CCMB in these areas and believe that the strides made by both institutions could be beneficial to the larger scientific community. We see a considerable common interest and complimentary expertise and this interaction will benefit the progress of science in both of these institutions. The intellectual property and development made by the CCMB is very impressive and that the association will contribute significantly to CCMB. This agreement would provide an important platform on which to build further collaborations."

In a statement, Dr Sarath Kumar of CCMB said that Cardiff University would help CCMB develop nascent bioinformatics unit especially with the Wales Gene Park, which will bring in expertise from an internationally renowned genetics community.

The MoU will provide a major impetus to the faster development on these frontline areas of biology in the country.

According to CCMB this understanding will lead to transfer of knowledge, joint research programmes, scientific exchange visits primarily to expedite the progress towards solutions for mammalian genetics and development of mouse models of human disease through applications of transgenics. The MoU is valid for five years.
