Telecommunications Cellular users need to be aware of virus attacks Multi-tiered protection system sought Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Dec. 2 CELLULAR phone users in India, a burgeoning community ever since the telecom sector was liberalised, should be aware of the possibility of virus attacks. Mr Ajit Pillai, Channel Manager - India Overseas Business Unit, Trend Micro, stated this, while speaking on ``Security and IT Infrastructure'' at Infocom 2002 here on Monday. ``There have already been PC-based viruses that have mobile phone payloads,'' he said, adding that in India, the need of the hour is individual user education. That, it is felt, will be the key to better security against a general lack of understanding about viruses. The virus scenario has undergone serious changes over time, and computer virus is in a self-replicating mode at the moment. Old viruses, however, refuse to die altogether, and there could be a virus lying undetected, waiting for another chance before it surfaces, it was pointed out. The Internet, in fact, sometimes allows long-hidden remnants of virus strains to re-enter the mainstream. New viruses are being found at an alarming rate, a phenomenon that has shocked the Net community. What is needed is a multi-tiered protection system, which will cover various aspects of computer use, Mr Pillai maintained. ``It is best not be afraid of viruses, nor should you underestimate their impact on your enterprise,'' he commented. Trend Micro, incidentally, is a leading player in server/gateway anti-virus software. Mr Anil Valluri, Director - Systems Engineering, Sun Microsystems (India), underlined the significance of `identity service'. The concept of identity is very strong in the realm of computing; without identity, there cannot be an enduring relationship with customers, employees and business partners. Knowledge of customers and partners is a critical issue everywhere.
