Vizag airport expansion

Our Bureau

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam, the industrial hub of Andhra Pradesh, will soon find a place in the world aviation map, with the foundation stone being laid recently by the Union Defence Minister, George Fernandes, for the long-desired Vizag airport expansion and modernisation project.

The Rs 190-crore project, which is expected to be wrapped up within two years, envisages construction of a new runway, apron and taxiway, apart from other associated facilities to operate the wide-bodied aircraft such as Airbus 300. An air-conditioned terminal building for domestic and international passengers, on par with the one at Dubai and Kuala Lumpur airports, will also be set up.

While the Defence Ministry will contribute Rs 140 crore, the Andhra Pradesh Government and the Airports Authority of India would chip in with Rs 25 crore each for undertaking the project.
