`Convergence India' to focus on broadband

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Dec. 30

THE eleventh edition of Convergence India, the largest and longest-running infocom event in the region could not have come at a more appropriate time.

With increasing competition in the telecom sector, the stage seems set for a massive explosion in communications, with the existing players consolidating their operations and newer operators gearing up to "charge" their networks.

The event, which is to be held from March 11 to 13, 2003, at New Delhi has as its theme: ``Broadband Show for New Generation Communications'' with an attempt to link broadband options in the digital marketplace with cutting edge technologies in the field of broadband networking infrastructure and services. According to organisers of the show — Exhibitions India — the three days would highlight satellite communications, high-speed digital network for the distribution of digital entertainment, interactive services, multimedia communications, and the equipment, both hardware and software.

The event features the fusion of information technology, communications and entertainment that will yield a future driven by converged technology, fully interactive and interconnected.

The international exhibition is billed to feature some of the global tycoons in the industry, showcasing their equipment and services at the special country pavilions from China, France, Israel, the UK and the US. A high-profile international conference, held concurrent to the 11th Convergence India 2003 exhibition, would also facilitate discussions converging technologies including telecommunications, IT and broadcasting across the globe by stimulating new ideas and offering cost-effective solutions on the theme ``Next Generation Convergent Communications.''

The officials noted that France is the ``Partner Country'' at the meet. Leading French players will display their technical skills at the special country pavilion, and will explore new business avenues. This initiative is supported by UBI France, (agency for the international promotion of French Technology and Trade) that assists French companies to develop and establish stronger international contacts.

UBI France also offers unrivalled expertise in the promotion of French technology, products and services. The Telecommunications Industry Association, UK's leading association for the telecommunications industry, and benefiting from assistance provided by Trade Partners UK will sponsor companies exhibiting at the UK Pavilion.

The show's international focus, combined with the dramatic growth in opportunities for trade within the region, is attracting companies who will be exhibiting in the region for the first time, together with those returning to India to build on previous commercial successes. The Pavilion at 11th Convergence India will allow companies to demonstrate UK's ability to produce world-class products and services to meet the needs of this important market.

To top it, they added that since 1994 the US pavilion has been an integral part of Convergence India. The event has also received the certification from the International Trade Administration of the US Department of Commerce, highlighting the fact that it provides the best potential for export sales of US goods and services.

The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) would, therefore, be extending its support to the event with the intention to stimulate commercial activity between the two counties.

The officials noted that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is the co-sponsor and the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and IT is the co-organiser of this mega event. The other co-organisers are Association of Basic Telecom Operators, Cellular Operators Association of India, Global VSATForum, Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Internet Service Providers Association of India, Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India, Indo French Chamber of Commerce and VSAT Services Association of India.
