Events Aero India 2003 tipped to be a big draw Our Bureau
BANGALORE, Dec. 30 AERO India 2003, the fourth international air show, is just over a month away and promises to be 25 per cent bigger than last time with "overwhelming response" from international and national players. The biennial extravaganza is being held at the IAF Station at Yelahanka near Bangalore from February 5 to 9 and falls in the 100th year of first flight. Aero India 2003 is being projected as an ideal opportunity for international aviation majors to explore Indian tie-ups as the untapped defence sector has been opened up for 26 per cent FDI. Big names such as Boeing, Bombardier, ATR, BAE Systems, Embraer, Dassault, Alitalia, AECMA, GIFAS, Honeywell, Irkut, besides HAL, IAF, DRDO, ADA, Deccan Aviation, Pawan Hans and NAL are among the participants. Bangalore also hosted the previous air shows of 1996, 1998 and 2001. The last Aero India had 157 foreign, 72 domestic exhibitors and delegations from 42 countries. This time, there will be at least six national pavilions by the UK, France, the US, Israel, Italy and South Africa, according to the organiser, the Department of Defence Production and Supplies of the MoD. In addition, defence and domestic private aeronautical sector and reputed companies from around 15 countries, including Russia, the Netherlands, Poland, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Malaysia, Thailand, the Czech Republic and Ukraine have confirmed their participation on a larger scale, the release says. Indoor space has been sold out and indoor exhibition space has crossed 90 per cent. Flying displays by domestic and international participants will be the major attraction on all the five days, though public visits are being restricted drastically this time. A separate public viewing area has been created to keep the crowds out of the air pads. DRDO is organising a parallel international seminar on civilian and military aerospace technologies from February 6 to 8. Two theme sessions on world aviation and Indian scene will mark the century of the flight of the Wright Brothers.
