Alliance Air spreads wings to North-East

NEW DELHI, Dec. 30

ALLIANCE Air, the 100 per cent subsidiary of Indian Airlines, will launch regular flights with the newly-leased ATR 42-320 aircraft on January 2.

Initially, AA is to operate a daily service on the Kolkata-Dimapur and Dimapur-Guwahati sector, besides offering a thrice-a-week connection between Guwahati and Lilabari and four-times-a-week service between Guwahati and Agartala.

Official sources told Business Line that AA was to expand services in the region in a phased manner. "The second of the four ATR aircraft has already arrived. At the moment, the aircraft is undergoing painting and training. The second aircraft should join the fleet soon. We hope to launch flights to more sectors by the second week of January," airline officials said.

The launch of the new service will see AA increase from the existing four frequencies a week to a daily flight on the Kolkata-Dimapur sector and from twice-a-week flight to a daily flight on the Silchar-Imphal sector. Among the other sectors which will benefit include Kolkata-Silchar on which the number of flights will increase from six-times-a-week at present to nine-times-a-week.

The proposal for leasing ATR aircraft was cleared by the IA board in June 2002, and AA had signed a letter of intent for dry-lease of four ATR 42 aircraft in September 2002. The airline is taking the four aircraft on lease for a period of five years.

The start of the new service will see AA offering connectivity to one new station — Shillong — besides offering four new routes — Kolkata-Shillong, Guwahati-Dimapur, Guwahati-Aizwal and Silchar-Agartala — to the air traveller.

Meanwhile, if you are planning to fly by the new aircraft, be careful about how much baggage you carry.

Every adult flying the ATR aircraft will be allowed to carry 15 kg, while every child passenger will be allowed to carry only 5 kg.
