Import of medical equipment

The President, Mr Abdul Kalam, recently complained that the country was spending as much as Rs 3,000 crore every year to import medical equipment, and that a large amount of foreign exchange can be saved if these equipments are manufactured in India. However, the question is whether the imports are absolutely necessary, or are they avoidable luxuries?

How many people benefit from it? Often one hears that costly medical equipments lie idle due to bad maintenance, or lack of experienced operators. It has also become a fashion for many hospitals to have costly equipments, even if they are not needed.
