China-Pakistan rail wagon contract

Our Bureau

China is to supply 1,300 railway freight wagons to Pakistan. A contract on this was signed between the two countries recently in Beijing. The first group of 420 wagons will be produced in China and delivered to Pakistan by the end of this year, while the remaining 880 wagons will be manufactured in Pakistan under Chinese supervision over next two years in a joint venture. The $61-million contract, reportedly the biggest railway equipment export deal ever signed by China, will be executed jointly by two Chinese companies, Dongfang Electric Corporation and South China Locomotive & Rolling Stock Industry Corporation.

Pakistan's railway minister is believed to be leading a delegation of railway and communication officials on a visit to China to explore further railway cooperation between the two countries.
