Mixed trend at Kochi tea sale

Our Bureau

KOCHI, Feb. 23

A MIXED trend persisted for almost all varieties of tea at the Kochi tea auction. Though the leaf sale witnessed a good general demand, it was comparatively low for dust varieties.

The dust sale witnessed only a fair general demand and the quantity on offer was 744,000 kg. CTCs market opened by Rs 2-3 lower. But the drop was Rs 3-5 as the sale progressed and sometimes more especially for high priced larger lots. Orthodox tended to ease.

The best CTC varieties commanded prices between Rs 53 and Rs 73, medium CTC realised Rs 46-55 and poorer type were quoted by Rs 42-47. Highgrown BOPD fetched prices at Rs 55, while medium BOPD realised Rs 38.

However, the leaf sale witnessed a good general demand and the quantity on offer was 379,000 kg. Highgrown brokens fully firm to dearer while fannings were higher. Medium brokens and fannings steady to dearer following quality. Poorer type tended to ease. Whatever teas sold witnessed a steady market. There was slightly better enquiry from exporters on orthodox brokens and fannings.

The best Nilgiri varieties commanded prices between Rs 58 and Rs 93, medium orthodox realised Rs 48-56 and plain orthodox were quoted Rs 33-35. The best CTC leaf fetched at Rs 50, while medium CTC leaf realised Rs 43-48.
