Aim higher, Kalam tells Tirupur exporters

G. Gurumurthy

TIRUPUR, Feb. 23

THE President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, took a leaf out of his `Vision 2020' for a developed India and applied it for the knitwear-exporting town of Tirupur for its vibrancy in knitted garment exports.

While praising the Tirupur exporters for realising the Rs 5,000 crore export mark and setting the ambitious Rs 100,000 crore export target for the year 2020, the President has asked the knitwear producers to set their agenda for higher export growth on enhancing quality of manufacture, cost effectiveness and timely delivery if they were to succeeded in competing in the global trade.

Dr Kalam was addressing a meeting on `Knitwear India - vision 2020' organised by the Tirupur Exporters Association and Knitwear Cloth Manufacturers Association here on Saturday.

He also released the latter's silver jubilee year's souvenir on the occasion.

Tracing the path of the Tirupur industry's success in the sphere of knitwear production, Dr Kalam said he used to wonder what would have made Tirupur to achieve laurels in global knitwear market.

He saw the same perseverance and determination displayed by Jamshedji Naoroji in bringing the steel industry to India in the Tirupur entrepreneurs who developed the knitwear sector through hard work.

The exporting town too drew the strength from the `soul' of freedom fighter `Tirupur' Kumar, which helped them emerge strong in textile trade.

India's doubling its GDP growth by 2020 to emerge as a developed economy would rest on its achieving turnaround in five critical areas — agriculture, food processing, education and health, information technology, infrastructure including diversion of water to water-starved regions and self reliance in critical technology.

For Tirupur industry specific, Dr Kalam felt that Tirupur industry should develop multi-brand of its own so as to succeed in the knitted apparel exports.

Acquiring production skills and technology acumen would enable imparting value addition, which would create new world of opportunity for the Tirupur garment producers.
