`Nandanam' wins best film award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 23

NANDANAM, directed by Ranjit, has been adjudged the best film while Jayaraj has been chosen best director for his work in Kannaki in the Lux Asianet Film Awards-2003 announced here.

Dileep won the best actor award for his role in Kunhikkoonan while Kavya Madhavan (Oomapenninu Uriyaadapayan) and Navya Nair (Nandanam) shared the spoils for the best actress award.

Announcing the names of the winners, the Chairman of the jury committee, Mr K.S. Sethumadhavan, said here that the Lifetime Achievement award instituted by Asianet has gone to veteran actor and director, Madhu, for his outstanding contributions to the growth of Malayalam cinema.

Jagathy Sreekumar won the best supporting actor award for his role in Meesamadhavan, while Bhavana bagged the best supporting actress award for her performance in Nammal.

Elaborating on the procedure resorted to for selecting the winning entries, the Chairman of the jury said five entries each carrying the maximum number of nominations from viewers were initially chosen by the jury and subjected to further scrutiny before arriving at the ultimate winners. This apart, the jury was responsible for directly picking the winners in five technical sections.

The awards carry cash prizes ranging from Rs 1,25,000 for the best film, Rs 75,000 for the best director, Rs 50,000 each for the best actor and actress to Rs 25,000 each for the rest of the winners. The awards will be given away at a function here on March 2.
