BANGALORE, Feb. 23

TYCO Electronics Corporation India (TECI), plans to open a software development centre to support its parent, the US- based Tyco Corporation.

The centre, a part of the plan to strengthen India as a strong base for its activities, is to come up in its newly acquired integrated manufacturing facility at Whitefield near here.

The company produces connectors and cables for applications in various sectors like automobiles, telecom and appliances industry. The India base would eventually become a major outsourcing centre for Tyco, said Mr K.U. Subbaiah, Managing Director, TECI.

Talking to Business Line here, he said in certain manual assemblies the country had been found more advantages than China, where the company has a base.

"China will continue to be an important base, but India also will play a key role because of its distinct advantages", Mr Subbaiah said.

TECI, which has been able to overcome stiff competition, expects a 15- 20 per cent higher growth next year. It has been able to improve its volume. With its export projected to grow by 60 per cent this year, it aims to increase its market share to 34 per cent in the networking products.

Mr Subbaiah said, however, for the export-oriented units and electronics hardware technology parks (EHTP) to survive the zero duty challenge post- 2005, certain modifications should be made in the regulations. All sales to Domsetic Tariff Areas (DTA) should be treated as fulfilment of its obligation, currently limited to items at zero duty. It should relax the sub-contract norms and procedures for EHTP/EOU to facilitate quick sub-contracting to manage demand swings.
