Vigilance probe into power projects

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the renovation of some power projects during the tenure of the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government.

The allegations pertained to the renovation works on Pallivasal, Chengulam and Panniyar power projects. The Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, told newspersons after a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday that the decision on the inquiry was on the lines of the recommendations made by the Legislature Subjects Committee for the power sector.

Regarding the demand for a judicial inquiry into the police action at Muthanga on February 19, the Chief Minister said there was no need for a judicial probe into the incident. Besides, the National Human Rights Commission had already begun a quasi-judicial inquiry into it, he added. The special Cabinet meeting took stock of the State Budget for 2003-04, which will be presented in the Assembly on March 14.
