AirTel unveils new messaging service in Kerala

KOCHI, March 6

AIRTEL has unveiled general package radio services (GPRS) network for the first time in the State here on Thursday so as to provide both multimedia messaging service (MMS) as well as Mobile Office for the customers.

The MMS on GPRS, which would be offered free for the first 60 days, would enable customers to send their text messages with pictures, images and sound clips.

The Mobile Office was introduced for the benefit of business consumers to access e-mail and Internet on the their laptop using GPRS mobile and AirTel connection, Mr P.H. Rao, CEO, Southern Hub, Bharti Cellular Limited said. Mobile Office will be an asset for travelling executives as it enables to be in touch anytime and anywhere, he added.

The AirTel MMS is supported by a MMS Masala portal through its Web site whereby consumers can download photographs of their favourite film celebrities. GPRS on AirTel network offers great value for money as it showcases many indispensable features.

This value-added service from the company is bound to be a boost to mobile data usage and usefulness, he added.

Disclosing company's future plans in the State, Mr Rao said AirTel is currently Kerala's largest network covering 125 stations with over 225 base stations.

The company is planning to set up an additional 100 base stations by December 2004 with an investment of Rs 70 crore.
