Touchtel phone numbers changed in Coimbatore

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE, March. 6

TOUCHTEL, belonging to the Bharti group, is changing the telephone numbers of its basic telephone service from 6 to 7 digits from 00.00 hours on March 9, in Coimbatore and Tirupur.

Touchtel has already implemented the change in the numbering scheme in Chennai and Madurai.

In a press release, the company said the current first digit `8' of all Touchtel telephone numbers would be replaced by `53'.

For example the telephone number `856882' would be changed to `5356882' in Coimbatore and `821234' would be changed to `5321234' in Tirupur.

However, there will be no change in the numbering scheme in respect of numbers starting with `1' like 197 for directory enquiry.

The company would continue to connect calls coming to the existing numbers for a few days for the convenience of the subscribers. The change is being effected on the directive of DoT in order to rationalise and simplify the telephone numbering system nationwide.
