GRT discontinues marketing franchise with Days Inn

Nina Varghese

CHENNAI, March 6

G.R.THANGA Maligai Ltd has discontinued its marketing franchise with Days Inn of America for its flagship hotel - GRT Grand located in one of the Chennai's busiest business districts.

Mr M.O. Koshy, Vice-President, GRT Grand, said the company decided not to extend the marketing franchise, which came up for renewal at the end of five years.

Mr Koshy said that the location of the hotel has played a crucial role in its success in addition to the management by "empowered professionals". When asked if marketing franchises for hotels were becoming redundant in today's world, he said that hotels, which are situated in less advantageous locations, would benefit from marketing tie-ups. These marketing companies also help to put systems in place.

The company at present owns two hotels in the city - GRT Grand (four-star), GRT Radisson (five-star) and GRT Temple Bay, a resort hotel in Mahabalipuram that it took over from the Government-owned ITDC. Of the three, only GRT Radisson has a tie-up with Radisson. The company did not enter into any marketing tie-up for Temple Bay, where renovation work is still in progress.

Mr Koshy said the company has put in place marketing set-ups in Mumbai and Bangalore to promote GRT Grand and Temple Bay. The company has also entered into referral tie-ups with four hotels in a similar category in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore for cross sales.

The GRT Grand is being renovated in phases to give the hotel a new look. In the first phase, the public areas such as the banquet rooms have been refurbished. The refurbishing of the rooms will follow. The restaurants will also be given a new look, he said. One of the restaurants, The Oriental Pearl, will be relaunched, Mr Koshy said.
