Citric acid imports brought under dumping duty

K.R. Srivats

NEW DELHI, March 7

CITURGIA Biochemicals Ltd and the Rs 250-crore Solaris ChemTech Ltd (formerly BILT Chemicals) have a cause for cheer.

The Finance Ministry has imposed definitive anti-dumping duty on all citric acid imports from Indonesia and Thailand. A definitive anti-dumping duty, unless reviewed, lasts for five years.

Citric acid is a basic chemical that is used as a preservative in food, soft drinks and confectionary. It is also used in drugs, textile dyeing and printing industry. Solaris ChemTech alone has 25,000 tonne per annum citric acid manufacturing facility near Baroda.

Sources said that the Revenue Department has now imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty of $456.67 per tonne on all citric acid imports from Indonesia. In the case of citric acid imports from Thailand, a definitive anti-dumping duty of $374.36 per tonne has been imposed.

Meanwhile, the Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry has initiated an anti-dumping probe on all imports of sun/dust control polyester film from the UAE and Taiwan.
