Women on top make a point

BANGALORE, March 7

ON the eve of Women's Day, four women achievers' shared their triumphs and tribulations to a packed hall in Bangalore today.

Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman and Managing Director, Biocon India Ltd, Ms Kalpana Kar, Member, Bangalore Action Task Force, Ms Padma Ravichander, Managing Director, India Software Operations, HP Services, and Ms Geetanjali Kirloskar, President, Lintertainment, spoke on "incentivising" oneself and not allowing the gender to become a handicap. They were panelists at a discussion `Women Ahead and The Road Ahead - An Indo-US Perspective,' organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Karnataka.

Ms Shaw said seven out of 10 division heads at Biocon are women and three out of six R&D heads are women. "We have it in us to succeed," was her cheerleading call to women today.

Ms Kirloskar stressed that being a woman was not easy for her, especially because she joined the family business which belonged to her in-laws and because the nature of the business (advertising) itself was considered bohemian. "But I treated these problems as any individual would and only through sheer hard work was I able to prove to the men in my family, in the agency, in the media and in the industry that I mean business." She said one of the most important requisites for women to be successful is to keep good health and a happy state of mind. "There are some biological restrictions and a social order and I'm not the one to challenge them."

The HP chief, Ms Padma Ravichander, who has studied and worked for a greater part of her life in the US said she was impressed at the progress made by women in the country compared to more developed nations. She suggested a three-dimensional approach to boost the Indian woman's position: education, empowerment and opportunity to contribute.

Talking about a different dimension of success, Ms Kalpana Kar, who has spearheaded the programmes of BATF, spoke about nurturing projects in the public domain.
