HYDERABAD, March 7

HAVING established a State Highway Authority to serve as a coordinator between various departments in the State, the Andhra Pradesh Government has drawn up plans to create facilities for highway patrolling system, which is to be launched later this month.

Concerned about the growing number of road accidents in the State, the State Government has embarked on the process to establish a highway patrol mechanism that coordinates with various state departments.

A detailed plan is being drawn up to educate the road users as well, the Home Minister, Mr T.Devender Goud, said here today. For instance, last year, 34,142 accidents were recorded as against 28,902 in the preceding year.

Of these about 9,532 were fatal and over 46,000 people were injured. One of the major task entrusted to the State Highway Authority is to organise mobile patrolling along the national highway and 60 vehicles with paramedical teams will be stationed on the national highways in the State by the end of March this year.

These highway patrols will regulate and also respond to distress calls in removing casualities to the nearest medical centre or the trauma care centre, which are in the process of being established, Mr.Goud said. The State administration has identified certain accident-prone areas and necessary corrective measures have been initiated to re-engineer these roads.

Further, a detailed plan is being drawn up to educate road users and set up technical sensors, cameras and other gadgetary along highways to reduce violation of traffic laws while cruising on the national highways.

Following such series of measures, the Government expects these highway accidents to come down significantly.

To support these initiatives, the State Government also plans to leverage technology to ensure necessary safety measures.
