HYDERABAD, March 7

A EUROPEAN Union (EU)-India project has aimed at developing an integrated water management system for the city of Hyderabad.

The two-year initiative under the Asia-Urbs programme would be coordinated by the B.M. Birla Science Centre (BMBSC), here and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).

Experts from the EU countries will bring experiences from their countries and the technology skills to piece together a variety of data on water resources to be collected during the coming months to put in place a decision support system for the HMWS&SB to consider implementing according to, Dr B.G. Sidharth, Director of the BMBSC.

The European partners for the project include experts from Austria, Germany and Italy among others.

The EU team, representatives from HMWS&SB and other national institutes and State officials associated with water management participated in a three-day brainstorming session to formulate a framework for the project, he told newspersons.

Some of the key areas to be looked into are water quality, groundwater availability, pollution by various sources like industry, sewerage, present consumptions, requirement and demands and sustainability for the nearly 7 million population of the city, said the EU experts.

In addition to providing a water management system, demonstration of water technologies and feasibility of spin offs from sewerage treatment, recycling of water, etc. would be addressed so that at a later stage, they could be used to source technology and funds from the EU, they said.

Some of the experts who talked to the media, included Mr Friedrich Penny and Mr Dietmar Adam from Australia, Ms Marisa Sebald and Mr Josef Ernst from Euro Tech Management, Ms Georgia Aues and Ms Jane Wallace-Jones from Italy.
