NEW DELHI, March 7
THE Task Force on implementation of the conditional access system (CAS) has decided to offer 30 free-to-air channels that would be part of the basic tier.
Sources in the cable industry said that there are about 22 free-to-air channels and eight more such channels could be accommodated in the basic tier. However, the cost of the basic tier would be finalised at the next meeting. The basic tier will comprise not only private satellite channels but also Doordarshan channels. These channels will have a mix of entertainment, news, kids, sports and educational programming.
The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad, was present at Friday's meeting along with BJP MP, Mr Kirit Somiah. Sources added that Mr Prasad had asked the cable operators, multi-system operators and broadcasters to work together for the implementation of a conditional access system whereby people would have to pay for the channels they watch.
