Torpedo tested successfully

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, March 7

INDIA on Friday `torpedoed' itself into an elite club of developed nations capable of producing the deadly underwater weapon targeted to destroy submarines.

The indigenous version of the torpedo, manufactured by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), has been successfully test launched at Visakhapatnam, according to a release. Scientists at the Visakhapatnam-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), led by Rear Admiral S. Mohapatra and Mr K. Kondal Rao, the Director and Additional Director, respectively, were instrumental in designing and developing the torpedo. There are only eight countries in the world, which have the expertise of making torpedoes.

BDL, the defence public sector undertaking, which is the nodal agency for the production of torpedoes will undertake bulk production, after it is put through the necessary additional user evaluation trials.

A good number of the sophisticated technologies required for the development of torpedoes under aerodynamics, structural design, electronics, electro chemistry, software and communication fall withinin the ambit of the technology denial regime.
