Navy seeks Gulf sailing plans of shipping cos

MUMBAI, March 7

THE Indian Navy has asked domestic shipping lines to forward their sailing plans to the Persian Gulf region for the next three months.

This is part of the security measures being undertaken by the Navy to safeguard Indian merchant vessels in the event of a US attack on Iraq, said a shipping company official.

The Navy had convened a meeting of representatives of Indian shipping lines today to advise them on the security measures to be followed by them.

In the event of a war, Indian ships, particularly crude tankers sailing to and from the Gulf region, would be given Naval escort, the official said.

He said details of the security plans cannot be disclosed as "they are confidential.'' The meeting was convened by Naval Control of the Shipping Office.
