COIMBATORE, March 14

IN a bid to consolidate its market share in the petroleum sector and serve a niche market, the PSU oil major Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) launched its premium branded petrol `Speed' in Coimbatore today.

Though priced slightly higher than the regular petrol, the branded petrol is expected to provide higher mileage besides help reduce the maintenance cost. Speaking to newspersons in Coimbatore on the occasion, Mr S. Radhakrishnan, Director (Marketing), BPCL, Mumbai said `Speed', first launched in July 2002 in Mumbai, has won for BPCL `product of the year award'. Though the company did not focus on the higher mileage aspect of the product while marketing it, a market survey conducted recently showed that nearly 81 per cent of the customers mentioned that the branded petrol provided higher mileage.

Explaining the product advantage, he said `Speed' was a blend of petrol and multi functional additives sourced from Chevron Oronite Company in US and the deposit control additives helped remove deposits from fuel metering systems and components like fuel injectors, carburettor, fuel intake valves and ports and combustion chamber. Mr Radhakrishnan said the Petro Card launched by his company has also proved to be a popular and already their number has reached 1 million across the country.

Mr.V.Arunachalam, Territory Manager, BPCL, Coimbatore said the Post Master General (PMG) Coimbatore has expressed a desire to market the Petro Card through the post offices. Mr M.S. Srinivasan, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, launched `Speed' in a petroleum outlet here today.
