Announcements German Remedies to launch oral drug for Kala Azar Our Bureau
AHMEDABAD, March 14 GERMAN Remedies Ltd, a part of the Rs 1,100-crore Zydus Group, is set to launch Miltefosine, the world's first oral therapy to treat Kala Azar. Towards this, the company has entered into an exclusive marketing arrangement with Zentaris AG, the biopharmaceutical arm of Acterna Laboratories Inc. According to a company release, the drug would open up a new line of treatment for patients suffering from the dreaded disease, the existing treatment for which is administered by way of injection or infusion. Kala Azar, more commonly known as black fever, is one of the problematic tropical infections transmitted by the sand fly and India is one of its most common breeding grounds with an annual infection rate of 3.15 lakh people. While the convenience in administering the drug and a high efficacy rate are being shown as the advantages of Miltefosine, making it affordable to the Indian public would be the recent concessions in customs duty.
