Tourist arrivals up 17% despite war threats

ABU DHABI, March 14

THERE was a sharp increase in tourists arrival in India in the first two months of 2003 despite fears of a war in Iraq. In fact, the trend started in October 2002 with data showing an average growth of 15 per cent on overall arrivals, according to the India Tourism Office, Dubai.

Statistical information received from the Market Research Division, Ministry of Tourism, New Delhi, indicated that the overall number of foreign tourists to India rose from 4,69,283 in January-February 2002 to 5,50,986 during the corresponding period of 2003, showing 17.4 per cent growth.

Similarly, foreign exchange earnings increased from $509 million in 2002 to $624.32 million in 2003, a rise of 24 per cent compared to the earlier corresponding period.
