Human Resources Indians working abroad will be protected: Joshi Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 15 THE Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, has reiterated the Government's commitment to protecting the safety and self-respect of Indian professionals working abroad. The Minister made this remark to newspersons here while elaborating on the need for evolving a coherent and forceful response to the incident involving detainment and harassment of a group of Indian IT professionals in Malaysia. "We have taken a grave view of the episode. We are waiting to hear more on this from the Malaysian High Commissioner," Dr Joshi said. The treatment meted out to the professionals who carried valid travel documents along with them cannot be countenanced by any stretch of imagination. It has since been made clear to Malaysia that even bilateral arrangements for cooperation in various fields would have to be reviewed if immediate steps were not taken to assuage the feelings of the detained professionals. Later, speaking at a seminar on `Economic reforms in Kerala - A critical assessment,' organised by the Centre for Studies in Development Strategy (CSDS), Dr Joshi said that a task force set up to formulate a strategy for employment generation in the country had put forward a list of labour-intensive sectors that needed to be promoted with new vigour.
