Global defence expo in Abu Dhabi from today

Vimala Vasan

ABU DHABI, March 15

INDIA is participating in the 6th International Defence Exhibition and Conference, IDEX 2003, which opens in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. This year, the major global defence expo sees the participation of over 825 companies from 46 countries

The Indian Embassy said in a press release that a high level delegation from India would be present during IDEX 2003. The delegation would be led by Mr O. Rajagopal, Minister of State for Defence Production, Supplies and Parliamentary Affairs. The Ordinance Factory Board, Bharath Dynamics Ltd and Bharath Earth Movers Ltd would participate in the exhibition. Among the products on display would be the indigenously manufactured 155m Field Gun, a modified 130 mm gun, developed by the Ordinance Factory Board.

A live demonstration of the firing of this gun will be held during IDEX 2003 at Maqtara range near Abu Dhabi.

The highlight of India's participation in IDEX 2003 will be the presence of the Indian naval warship INS Mumbai, for the naval show being organised at Mina Zayed, as part of IDEX 2003. INS Mumbai is the third ship of the Delhi Class of Destroyers and is the tenth warship in history to bear the name of the city of Mumbai. The 6,700 tonne Mumbai is 163.2 metres long and is powered by four gas turbines with a top speed in excess of 30 knots.

Meanwhile, Saeed bin Jabr Al Suweidi, Deputy Chairman, General Exhibitions Corporation, GEC and Chairman of the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the 6th in the IDEX series had received a good response despite the current political tensions which engulf the region. "This is a clear indication of the absolute confidence entrusted in the UAE's wise policy and the security, stability and safety the UAE enjoys," he said, according to a statement from IDEX made available to Business Line.
