`Education quality in B-schools uneven'

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, March 20

IN terms of sheer numbers, business schools have proliferated in the country, but as far as quality is concerned, many are found wanting.

Though, several of these 930 B-schools produce glossy brochures and promise a lot, there is uneven quality, according to a rating done by COSMODE, the Hyderabad-based Management consulting and research group.

In addition to these 930 B-schools, which are recognised by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), there are another 44 schools which give foreign degrees. However, except for the Indian Institutes of Managements (IIMs) and some others, the overall standards need improvement, said Dr Dharni P. Sinha, Director of Cosmode.

During the last three years itself, AICTE has granted recognition to about 300 B-schools in the country. This huge number has not been commensurate with the required standards and can affect the brand created by the IIMs such as the IITs abroad, he told Business Line.

Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh leads in the number of B-schools with 130, followed closely by Tamil Nadu with 100, and Uttar Pradesh also close to a similar number. The maximum number of such institutions is also located in the South. Karnataka has 70 and Kerala about 40. There are very few in East and just 10 in North East.

Dr Sinha said there are more academic entrepreneurs in South and they have taken advantage, especially in the areas of engineering, medicine and management by starting new schools. He claimed that the rating done by Cosmode every two years was beneficial to students who wanted to pursue management studies.
