KOLKATA, March 20

WEST Bengal hopes to achieve a 7.6 per cent growth in State Domestic Product (SDP) in 2002-03, according to the Economic Review for year, tabled by the Finance Minister, Dr Asim Kumar Dasgupta, in the Legislative Assembly here today.

During the same period, the national economy was expected to grow at 4.4 per cent, the Economic Review stated quoting CSO figures.

In spite of the State's difficult financial situation, the current year's plan size is expected to reach Rs 3,794.41 crore and an additional Rs 1,800 crore is expected to be released from the Local Fund and Deposit Fund Accounts.

Small saving was expected to yield Rs 7,880 crore helping the State maintain its lead in this respect.

Despite inadequate rainfall during crucial periods in 2002-03 and reduction in land under cultivation, total rice production was likely to be around 149 lakh tonnes. This would be possible because of the improvement in yield rates.
