Music & Dance Kalamandalam tour package on offer Sankar Radhakrishnan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 20 IN an effort to leverage the universal interest in the State's traditional art forms, Kerala Kalamandalam, the pre-eminent centre for performing arts, has developed `A Day With The Masters', a special tour package that offers cultural aficionados an insight into the intricacies of these art forms. Conceptualised by Dr V. Venu, currently Deputy Secretary, Department of Tourism, Government of India, the tour offers visitors an opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes look at how the traditional art forms are taught at Kalamandalam. Visitors also get an opportunity to soak in the culture-rich ambience of the Kalamandalam campus located on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River at Cheruthuruthy in Kerala's Thrissur district. Audiences the world over have been captivated by Kerala's vibrant performing arts such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattom and Koodiyattom. `A Day With The Masters' has been designed to give visitors a glimpse into life at Kalamandalam without disrupting regular activities on the campus, says Dr Venu. Visitors are exposed to the rigorous training schedules, the discipline and dedication of the students and the depth of the guru-sishya relationship, all of which help shape great artists, he explains. The three-and-a-half hour tour begins with a multimedia presentation on Kalamandalam, which will soon celebrate its platinum jubilee. This is followed by a visit to the Koothambalam or temple theatre. Visitors then move on to the kalaris where they get to watch budding performers during their daily training sessions. Student-guides, who have studied for at least three years at Kalamandalam, will accompany each group of visitors right through the tour and will explain the intricacies of each art form. The celebrated gurus of Kalamandalam will also interact with visitors and offer them insights into the different art forms. Visitors also get to view a presentation on Kerala's mural art and the origins of dance, besides an opportunity to visit the costume gallery and appreciate the garments, jewellery, masks and other accessories that are used in various traditional art forms. Priced at $20 per person, the tour includes a traditional Kerala lunch. It has to be booked in advance.
