Kuwait Air to suspend flights to Delhi, Chennai

Ashwini Phadnis

NEW DELHI, March 25

KUWAIT Airways has decided to suspend flights to Delhi and Chennai for a week starting March 29 while operating normal services to Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

Meanwhile, the airline has also decided to levy an insurance surcharge of $25 per one-way ticket and $50 per return ticket to Kuwait. This is to be in addition to the $20 fuel surcharge that is already being levied on a return ticket.

"The airline's flight plans to India are being reviewed on a week-to-week basis. For the week starting March 29, KA will operate a daily flight to Mumbai. During the same week, the airline is looking to operate all its regular flights to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi," sources said.

At the same time, the airline is offering only limited number of flights from Kuwait to London and has stopped operating flights to the US all together.

The cutback in services is said to be a direct fallout of the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. During normal times, the airline has 25 weekly flights between Kuwait and different Indian cities including a four-times-a-week connection to Chennai and a daily flight to Delhi. Despite the ongoing conflict, the airline is said to be keen on not withdrawing totally from the Indian market.

However, the sources said, it wants to be in a position where it is possible to cope with the developing situation in a manner which benefits the passenger and the airline in the shortest time period.

Meanwhile, despite the American airline Delta announcing about 12 per cent cutback in flights, the Indian operations of the airlines will not be affected.
