Kalam to inaugurate rural project

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will formally inaugurate the extension of the Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) to the villages of Puttur on March 28 before coming to Mangalore.

SKDRDP, which is functioning in selected areas in the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, started working in Puttur since last June. In its operations in Puttur, the project has started working in 60 villages and has already promoted 1,800 self-help groups covering 16,150 families. These groups are said to have already saved Rs 1 crore and are ready for credit linkage.

SKDRDP interacts with the rural community by forming self-help groups, conducting women's empowerment programmes, preparing annual farm plans for `systematic development', irrigation facilities, integrated village development activities, formation of village-level federations of SHGs, as well as assisting in areas such as micro-finance and education.

The Governor of Karnataka, Mr T.N. Chaturvedi, will accompany Dr Kalam to Dharmasthala. Among the others who will be attending the inauguration of the Puttur rural project are the Union Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes, the District Minister, Mr B. Ramanatha Rai.
