`IT sector growth healthy despite global slump'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, March 26

THE continuing slump in the global technology industry has not severely affected the information technology (IT) industry as the domestic market and software exports notched up healthy growth in 2002, according to a report by Skoch Consultancy Services, an IT market research firm.

Skoch said in its report, released here today, that the domestic IT market grew by nine per cent in 2002 to touch Rs 23,774 crore, while software exports increased by 30 per cent in dollar terms to touch $8 billion.

The growth in the domestic market came mainly from major spending by the Government, banks and financial institutions, education and telecom sectors. More than half of the revenues had come from the 1.8 million PCs and other hardware products sold during the year, the report said.

A major contributor to software exports has been the IT-enabled services sector. Also, small and medium sized companies operating out of software technology parks helped boost exports with a share of over 50 per cent.

The report said action in the domestic IT market was shifting from metros to non-metros and the latter was expected to have a share of 52 per cent by 2003 compared to 20 per cent in 1997.

This is largely because of an increased thrust to implement e-governance projects across the country as well as the growth of small and medium enterprises in non-metros.

Skoch said total PC sales in 2002 stood at 1.79 million units, up by 14 per cent from the previous year. Banking and finance, telecom and education sector together accounted for as much as 18 per cent of total PC sales.

Thought PC sales are going up, the increase in volumes has not driven the prices down. Total value of PCs showed a rise of 11 per cent.

Skoch also said it found that the Indian hardware industry was "overstated by as much as $600 million because of the trickle down impact from a $40-billion global IT grey market.''
