BANGALORE, March 26

SAMSUNG Electronics today announced the launch of a range of IT products in the Indian market, besides introducing a new PC (personal computer) upgrade scheme.

The products aimed at converging the three spaces that the company is strong in, worldwide - - infotech, communication and entertainment, said Mr Sonal Anand, Country Manager, Products, Samsung.

The products include a combo writer with CD ROM, DVD ROM and CD writer; DVD writer for the first time in the country; new series of hard disk drives; Humming Bird, the world's smallest laser printer; Rhine, multifunctional inkjet printer and fax machine; the largest TFT LCDs for public places such as airports and Vango, the thinnest HDD.

Today, the PC was moving into living rooms and doubling up as the second television sent, Mr Anand said.

To cater to this segment, the combo writer and DVD writer came with a "noise guard" feature, so that there was no whirring sound every time a CD was used.

The convergence monitor that merges the PC and sharper TV screens is expected to offer value in semi-urban areas, according to Mr Anand. The convergent monitor (estimated to have 7-8 per cent marketshare) is expected to have a market in the "digital home" space too, where it can be interfaced with the microwave or refrigerator.

The company also believes that 3 million of the 8 million PCs in India are over three years old and ripe for upgrades.

Users were looking beyond word processing and simple calculations to security, information, communication and entertainment, which the upgrade offer could provide, he said.

Based on the premise that Indian consumers in general do not want to discard their old machines, the company has a "turbo upgrade' offer where users can exchange existing components for a new 17inch monitor, 722 rpm hard disk drive and combo drive.

The three together could push up performance by up to 300 per cent, Mr Anand said.

The company expected to grow by 25 per cent in terms of revenues over last year, Mr Anand said.
