Industry flays Kochi tax on luxury items

Our Bureau

KOCHI, March 26

SEVERAL commercial organisations have criticised the Budget proposals of the Kochi Corporation to introduce city tax on luxury goods.

The Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry demanded withdrawal of the move to impose city tax on refrigerator, gold and other items and on the goods imported through the Kochi Port. According to the Chamber, the imposition of a tax on these goods would force the exporters and importers to move out of the city.

The Chamber said that the move would not yield the expected results. With the traders moving beyond Corporation limits, the revenue from property tax, licensing fee and professional tax will take a nosedive. The Chamber also demanded the State Government to deny permission to the Corporation to collect such tax.

The Ernakulam Merchants Association also criticised the move of the civic authorities, saying the imposition of tax did not come within the purview of the Corporation. They said that there was no point in imposing a city tax in view of the proposed implementation of VAT in the State.

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that instead of trying to impose such a novel levy, the Corporation had to lend maximum support to the promotion of business activities within its limits, which will in turn bring in more revenue.
