Co-operatives New administrator appointed for Prudential Bank Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, March 26 THE Andhra Pradesh Government has asked the Additional Secretary in the Relief Department, Mr E. Satyanarayana, an IAS officer, to take charge of the affairs at Prudential Bank. He was expected to take charge as the Administrator today evening and start supervising the bank's activities from Thursday morning. However, all the 20 branches of the bank remained closed even on Wednesday, leaving in dark thousands of its depositors waiting outside the branches for withdrawals. As per the bank officials, the branches would start functioning from Thursday and act according to the RBI imposed restrictions on the withdrawals. Meanwhile, the panic withdrawals at most of the relatively weaker and even some of the strong urban cooperative banks continued across the State on Wednesday. According to the representatives of the AP State Cooperative Urban Banks Federation, the withdrawals last week crossed the Rs 100-crore mark and nearly half-a-dozen banks across the State were likely to land in trouble following the pressure on larger banks. Despite the directives of RBI to withdraw inter-bank deposits by June 2002, most of the State-based urban cooperative banks continue to maintain such deposits with relatively stronger banks.
