Truckers plan to continue stir

BANGALORE, April 14

TRUCKERS in Karnataka plan to continue the strike in solidarity with their counterparts in other States in line with demands sought for certain national issues, even as their regional issues seemed to have resolved on Monday after discussions with the State Government officials.

About 1.75 lakh lorries all over the State went off the roads from midnight on Sunday in response to a call for indefinite strike by the All India Motor Transporters' Congress.

"We have got a positive response from the State Government as officials have promised us to look into the regional issues," said Mr B. Channa Reddy, President of the Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners' Association. Truckers' regional demands among others included enforcement of overloading and setting up of truck terminals in Bangalore and other parts of the State, he said. Overloading by several lorry operators is not only taking away others business but also causing significant damage to the roads, Mr Reddy said. While essentials such as milk and water tankers had been exempted from the strike, tractors and other means are being used for supply of vegetables, Mr Reddy said.
