Bio-tech & Genetics Karnataka Govt finalises location for biotech park Our Bureau
BANGALORE, April 14 THE Karnataka Government has finally decided the location for setting up a biotechnology park in the State. The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, would be unveiling the foundation stone on Tuesday for the proposed park "Bangalore Helix" during the inaugural of Bangalore BIO 2003, the third annual international biotech event, said Mr D.B. Inamdar, Karnataka's Infotech, BT and Tourism Minister, at a press conference here on Monday. Bangalore Helix is expected to come up on a 75-acre campus next to the Electronics City on the Bangalore-Chennai national highway. "There is adequate demand from the biotech companies to set up units at the new park," Mr Inamdar added. The proposed biotechnology park's venue was changed at least twice before the Electronics City venue was finalised. The park was initially planned to be part of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Campus at Hebbal. However, the decision to set up the biotech park at UAS, evoked strong protest from students. Therefore, an alternative venue was announced closer to the Ring Road behind the Hebbal Tank. However, now even that site had been given up and a new venue close to the Electronics City has been firmed up. The State IT Department is also planning to shift the Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology to the new park which would have a common testing facility to be set up at a cost of Rs 50 crore, said Mr Vivek Kulkarni, Secretary IT and BT, Government of Karnataka.
