Research & Development IIT-B, VIA Tech set up lab for `affordable' PCs Our Bureau
MUMBAI, April 14 THE Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, has announced the opening of the Affordable IT Solutions Lab, which has been set up in association with the Taiwan-based VIA Technologies with an aim of bringing `affordable' technologies to Indian users. The lab, set up at the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology (KReSIT) at IIT-Bombay, is equipped with 60 computers of various capacities. "The lab will carry out research, testing software functionalities and hardware requirements, with the aim of making personal computers more affordable to Indian users," said Prof Deepak B. Pathak, head, KReSIT, here on Monday. "This lab will be used to test and validate affordable computing platforms as well as to develop new product concepts for India and other markets. VIA Technologies plans to expand this cooperation with IITs in Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi," said Mr Richard Brown, Associate Vice-President, Marketing, VIA Technologies. The company, which offers a range of PCs priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000, has already sold close 40,000 PCs in India since it entered the market earlier this year. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will sponsor the research efforts at the lab. According to Mr S. Ramadorai, CEO, TCS, "We are in talks with the institute and trying to figure out the exact sum of the sponsorship."
