Real Estate & Construction AP State-level workshop on fly ash utilisation Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, April 14 THE Rayalseema Thermal Power Plant of the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation (APGenco) generates about 12 lakh tonnes of fly ash every year. Of this, a mere 12 per cent is utilised, while the rest goes waste. Similarly, there are several thermal plants across the country, which produce fly ash as a by-product. Efforts are on to convert this fly ash into useful products such as bricks and tiles and reduce the environmental burden they can turn out to be. In Andhra Pradesh, the Fly Ash Building Material Manufacturers Association has been actively engaged in promoting the mass utilisation of this waste. To increase awareness about the potential utilisation and the current trends, a regional workshop has been planned at Cuddapah on April 19. The Institute for Solid Waste Research & Ecological Balance, Visakhapatnam, is organising the workshop, which would be inaugurated by the State Housing Minister, Mr P. Rama Subba Reddy, and sponsored by the APGenco. The workshop would focus on the technology, feasibility and economics of fly ash bricks and setting up plants for production. The Centre and the State Government have provided encouragement for the production of Fal-G (Fly ash) bricks. More than 900 units have been set up, with more than half of them in the State, a press release said. The utility of fly ash bricks is also set to increase in the State in view of the Government making it mandatory to use blended cements and fly ash bricks for construction purposes.
