`Urban lifestyle' major cause for diabetes

Our Correspondent

MADURAI, April 14

THE 2002 Annual Review of the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) has reported that the genetic predisposition, besides adoption of an `urban lifestyle', is the major factor for a large number of Indians turning diabetic.

It has a tendency to attack the South Asian people, especially the Indians, it is said.

Recent surveys have indicated that there was 20 per cent certainty of one becoming a diabetic if there was a family history of the disease. If one of the parents was a diabetic, the percentage progressed. There is 70 per cent chance if one of the parents is a diabetic and one can be 90 per cent sure if both the parents have diabetes.
