BANGALORE, April 14

DESPITE being impacted marginally by the Iraq war and the SARS scare, Bangalore Bio 2003, the third annual international biotech tradeshow is set to take off on a positive note on Tuesday.

About 120 companies from 20 countries are participating in the three-day event, said Mr D.B. Inamdar, Karnataka's IT, BT and Tourism Minister. About 72 companies participated in the last year's event.

"While the Iraq War and the SARS scare did impact us marginally, we have seen very few cancellations, both from speakers and participating companies," said Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson of Karnataka's Vision Group on Biotechnology, which is organising the event. However, the participation is higher this year compared with last year, she said.

"We have managed to build a strong visible brand in the last three years," she said, adding that 12 Indian premier research labs would be participating in the event to showcase institutional R&D. Over 70 speakers including scientists and technologists would be attending the conferences at the event, which would dwell on bioprocessing, platform technologies, bioinformatics and venture capital funding among others.

A Vision Group Survey on the "Bio Education in Karnataka" is also being released on Tuesday. The survey analyses the Bio Education scene in Karnataka and has suggested recommendations on how to improve the bio education programmes, said Ms Shaw.

Bangalore Bio 2003 is sponsored by the UK. Denmark and France have given their endorsement to the show and would send business delegations, said Mr Inamdar. Five states namely Andhra Prades, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat besides Karnataka are participating in the event.

Bangalore Bio, would see the launch of `Bangalore Helix', the much-awaited biotech park in the city, and ABLE, the Association of Biotech Led Entreprises. "ABLE would be the Nasscom equivalent for the Biotechology industry. What Nasscom is for IT, ABLE will be for the biotech sector to create awareness about the industry," Ms Shaw said.
