Partial support in Bengal for transport strike

KOLKATA, April 14

IT will be a few more days before the impact of the goods transporters' strike can be felt in West Bengal, according to the spokesman for a leading transport company which is a member of the Calcutta Goods Transport Association, an affiliate of the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC).

As it is, business activity in the State is on a low key because of the holidays.

The majority of the offices and establishments in the State are virtually closed for almost the entire week.

Even the banks will remain closed for four days.

As a cumulative effect of all this, the goods movement in any case would have been lower this week than in the normal situation.

Also, as a spokesman for Truck Owners' Association of Bengal said, the members of the Posta Goods Transport Association, an association of transport operators active in the Posta area, the busy commercial centre in the city, have decided not to participate in the strike for the next few days in view of the Bengali New Year's Day which falls on April 15.

They would not like to be left out of the additional business to be generated on the occasion of the New Year.

As a result, an estimated five per cent of the total of two lakh vehicles in the State will continue to ply for the next few days.

The spokesman concedes that it is difficult to guarantee total suspension of goods movement at all levels.

"Each district has a goods transport association that has pledged to observe the strike. But whether AIMTC's writ will run even at the lowest level is another matter."He added that the indications are that the strike has been good in various parts of the State.
