Coin counters for Vishu

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Posts has tied up with the regional office of the RBI to set up coin counters in the city on the occasion of Vishu festival, the Malayalam New Year, on Tuesday.

These counters are intended to cater to the increased demand for coins of Re 1, Rs 2 and Rs 5 denomination which elders hand out to children as the symbolic Vishukaineettam. This, along with the Vishukkani (the auspicious first-sighting early on Vishu morning) is believed to bring in prosperity and good tidings.

Of the three counters that opened on April 10, the counter at the General Post Office in the heart of the city registered a record sale of coins for Rs 75,000 on the first two days, while the festival counter of Chalai Post Office in the busy market area logged Rs 43,000. The Medical College Post Office had a sale of Rs 15,000. The relatively higher sales at the GPO counter were attributed to its prime location.
