Alwar Malt to invest Rs 15 cr for new plant

Neha Kaushik

NEW DELHI, April 19

KEEPING an eye on the expansion plans of various foreign liquor manufacturers in India, Alwar Malt group (currently the third largest malt producer in the country) is planning to invest Rs 15 crore to set up a new malt plant in Rajasthan.

"The new malt plant will be a captive unit, in other words, the malt will be produced on the specifications of the liquor companies. We have already tied-up with Shaw Wallace for the same", Mr Vishal Yadav, Director, Alwar Malt group, said.

At present, the group owns two malt units and is supplying to the likes of Whyte & Mckay, Mt Shivalik and Shaw Wallace.

AMG also has a bottling division under which it bottles for the likes of Radico Khaitan and BDA among others. The company, however, has now decided to roll out its own brands into the market in varied liquor segments. At present, it has rolled out three new products — Aravali White Rum (priced at Rs 320), Saturday Night Whisky, and Bombay Duck Gin. "We are steadily increasing the distribution network of our brands and entering new markets. Aravali rum has already received a very positive response, especially from foreigners visiting India. We are now looking at exports of the brand to a few European countries", Mr Yadav said.

Meanwhile, hoping to cash in on its distribution strengths in North India, Alwar Malt has struck alliances with several companies, including Shaw Wallace, to distribute their brands in the Delhi market.

The company will now be distributing the brands Mughal Monark, Old Tavern and Haywards fine whisky, all from the Shaw Wallace stable, in Delhi. It has also tied-up with a couple of South India-based liquor companies to bring in brands such as Andhra Tiger whisky and Salsa XXX Rum into the Delhi market. It is targeting a turnover of Rs 200 crore in the current fiscal.
