NEW DELHI, April 19

THE All-India Co-ordination Committee for Powerloom Centres, a new body formed to represent the interests of powerloom industry, has urged the Government to postpone for the time-being the imposition of Cenvat duty (excise) on this segment.

In a statement, the new body highlighted that over 18 lakh powerlooms have now been shut down in the country. It held that a new method of taxation could be evolved in due course through joint consultation between trade, industry and the Government.
